How long does a semi-permanent manicure last?

What is a semi-permanent manicure?

A semi-permanent manicure uses gel polishes that are cured under a UV or LED lamp. Unlike traditional polish, it doesn't dry in the air: the polymerisation process makes it extremely resistant to knocks and scratches.

How long does it really last?

The average duration ranges from 2 to 4 weeks. Several factors influence it:

  • Nail preparation: if the surface isn't clean and dehydrated before the gel is applied, the polish lifts sooner.
  • Product quality: professional brands such as CND Shellac or Gelish adhere better than low-cost gels.
  • Client habits: frequent contact with water, detergents or oils speeds up peeling.
  • Natural growth: the visible root isn't a durability problem but a growth one, so having to renew it at 3 weeks is completely normal.

Tips to make it last longer

  1. Moisturise your cuticles daily with jojoba oil or vitamin E.
  2. Wear gloves when washing up or cleaning the house.
  3. Avoid using your nails as tools (opening cans, scraping surfaces).
  4. Apply a top coat specific for semi-permanent polish every week.

When is it best to remove it?

It is advisable to remove a semi-permanent manicure when it starts to lift or after 4 weeks at the most. Leaving it longer can damage the natural nail because of the moisture that builds up under the lifted gel.

At Prettify we remove it using a wrapped acetone soak technique, without over-filing the surface of the nail.

Semi-permanent or traditional manicure?

If you have an event coming up or travel often, semi-permanent is your best ally: no need for touch-ups for weeks and no risk of chipping. For those who prefer to change colour every week, traditional polish gives more freedom.

How long each type of manicure lasts

To put semi-permanent in context against the other options:

TechniqueDurationRemoval
Traditional polish3 to 7 daysAt home, with nail polish remover
Semi-permanent2 to 4 weeksAt the salon, with acetone
Semi-permanent over Russian manicure3 to 4 weeksAt the salon, with acetone
Gel nails3 to 4 weeks + infillAt the salon, with a drill
Acrylic nails3 to 4 weeks + infillAt the salon, with a drill

If you're interested in comparing extensions, we cover it in acrylic vs gel nails. And if you've heard of Russian manicure as the one that lasts longest, there we explain what it involves and why we don't offer it.

Why it lasts less for some people

It's the most repeated question in the cabin, and almost always the answer isn't in the polish:

  • Nails that sweat or have a lot of natural moisture: some people have a more porous nail plate and the gel grips less well. It is compensated with an acid-free primer and more careful preparation.
  • Jobs with hands in water: hairdressing, hospitality, healthcare or cleaning clearly shorten the duration.
  • Very flexible nails: if the natural nail bends, the gel covering it cracks.
  • Insufficient curing: old or low-power lamps leave the gel poorly polymerised. That's a salon fault, not yours.
  • Layers that are too thick: the more product, the more leverage and the more lifting.

Signs it needs removing now

  • It lifts at the sides or the base, even slightly.
  • You feel an air gap when you press the nail.
  • More than 4 weeks have passed.
  • You see a greenish tint under the gel, which indicates trapped moisture.

That last case should be looked at calmly but not ignored: it is moisture that has got in through a lifted area and the polish has to be removed and the nail left to breathe.

Does it damage the natural nail?

Semi-permanent polish itself doesn't damage the nail. What does are two specific things: peeling it off by pulling at the edge, which takes layers of keratin with it, and over-filing during preparation or removal. That's why removal should always be done at the salon.

Nor is it essential to "let your nails rest" between services if the work is done well. It is a good idea if you notice the nail plate thin or soft: in that case, two or three weeks with a hardener and cuticle oil daily help it recover.
